ARTIST RESEARCH REVIEW

While researching artists who have inspired my own work, I focused on those in the field of animation. I chose these artists because their work has unique traits and concepts that sparked ideas for my final major project. After conducting research and analysis, I created a response to each artist, incorporating aspects and traits from their work into my own pieces.

One of the artists I researched was Crymelt, an animator I found on YouTube. What drew me in instantly was her captivating art style and her fantastic storytelling through visual means. Crymelt's work often has a personal touch, featuring herself or themes associated with her. While creating something personal is not my main goal for my final project, I admire how she conveys illustrative storytelling through her visual and symbolic animations, which aligns with the theme I've chosen. Crymelt uses digital software like Callipeg and LumaFusion, which are not familiar to me as they are not available on iOS. However, since she has created content using Procreate, an app I have experience with, I want to incorporate some of her techniques into my own work. I particularly admire Crymelt's captivating art style for its simplicity and visual appeal. I believe a simple art style would make the animation process easier while still being visually pleasing. Crymelt has inspired me to explore different art styles and experiment with those that would best suit my final animation.

Another artist I researched was Fernanda Dias who I discovered from instagram, known for her stunning and fluid animations featuring her own original characters in short clips and videos that she animates using the software Photoshop. What I particularly enjoy about Fernanda's work is how expressive and lively she animates her movements. While I may not be able to replicate the same level of smoothness and fluidity due to my limited skills and experience in animating, I aim to capture the expressiveness she conveys in her characters' expressions. Capturing emotions is crucial in storytelling, especially considering that my project encompasses various feelings and emotions. Therefore, emulating Fernanda's ability to convey characters' emotions will be beneficial for my final major project. Fernanda has inspired me to effectively convey the personalities of my characters visually. As I move forward with the development process, I will make sure that the designs, expressions, and visual aspects of my characters effectively convey their personalities and vibes.

An artist I have also researched is Ian Zhang, known for creating short animations most notably on TikTok. Zhang's animation style is truly unique; the use of flowy and choppy frame rates creates a visually striking movement that sets his animations apart. I am keen on capturing this distinct animation style in my own work, as animation styles compliment the aesthetic or genre of the video. Given that my project is rich in storytelling, I am drawn to the idea of capturing an animation style that evokes a comic-like appearance. This selective animation style also aligns with my preferences, as I won't have to overly concern myself with achieving fluidity in my frames while still maintaining visual appeal. I also appreciate his use of color to portray the mood of the subject matter. This aspect can be beneficial for my storytelling, allowing me to depict the mood of a scene effectively. As I progress, I aim to capture the captivating movement in Zhang's work as I begin to work on the rough animations for my music video. Additionally, I plan to use color codes to effectively convey the mood I want to portray in each scene.
