Crymelt is an artist I discovered on YouTube. She is known for her animations and drawings. This video is an animation meme on YouTube - An animation meme being an animated short video to a specific song that is repeated by other animator creators, often with their own characters/spin-on - she produced using the software's Callipeg, LumaFusion. The video consists of an animation to the song “Two Time - Jack Stauber '' The scenes being depicted are random and don’t provide much context other than the clips being associated to the lyrics in some way. However, they are very visual and unique enough to allow the viewer to come up with some sort of interpretation. The overall mood and theme of this video is not prominent as there are multiple scenes where each could be interpreted differently, however. I feel this video conveys the concept of coping, as in the description, Crymelt puts a caption “when is it time to let go?” Considering the contents of the video where visuals like hearts and love letters can be seen, this animation could be interpreted as moving on from rejection or someone you have once loved. Something that I enjoy about Crymelts work is artstyle she uses. Her artstyle is quite simple yet detailed enough to be visually compelling, I like the use of a simple colour palette, she keeps the colour variation quite limited. This is something I should consider for my animation as it makes the work more animation friendly and ensures I don't spend too much time on fully coloured and rendered frames.

This video is another animation that I came across on Crymelt’s YouTube, titled “Animal Cannibal | Animation Meme.” She produced this video using the softwares Callipeg, and LumaFusion. The video is an animation to the song “Possibly in Michigan - by Cecelia Condit '' The animation contains horror aspects like depictions of blood, cannibalism, and dark lighting. Not much context is portrayed in the video other than spontaneous clips and mild disturbing imagery complementing along with the song's lyrics. despite no obvious storyline, the visuals are enough to understand the theme and genre of the video. Crymelt adds a caption in the description of the video saying "I fear who I am becoming"  This small context could be interpreted as something dehumanising. The video's contents contain a character with multiple other characters who look almost identical, there seems to be themes of cannibalism specifically directed to “herself”? This concept could have metaphorical symbolism behind it, something I could interpret as her only eating people who she desires to look like. Crymelt makes use of stunning lighting in this video that helps with creating the mood and environment the video is set in. The environment appears dark and gloomy, with the only light source being dim overhead lighting. This aspect is something I want to imitate in my FMP as the environment for a concert is something I want to animate that also requires a dark environment with spotlights being the only source of lighting.

This video Is an animation meme by crymelt produced by using Callipeg and Procreate. I came across this video on YouTube. The videos contain clips that carry heavy symbolism and meaningful imagery that appear to show themes of self burn out and meeting high expectations, this concept is further emphasised in the description where Crymelt adds a caption saying ”If I worked harder back then, would I be happier today?” Crymelt uses a rather muted and unsaturated colour palette in this animation, effectively conveying the sombre and gloomy atmosphere of the video's subject. Something I particularly like about Crymelt’s work in this video is her animation style. The animation seems smooth enough to show movement, but it's missing a few frames to look truly fluid. Giving it a choppy yet lively feel. This is something I may consider doing for my own work as trying to achieve such. This is something I might think about for my own work, as attempting to achieve such seamless animation by drawing numerous frames can be quite time-consuming.

ANIMATION PROCESS

IBIS PAINT X

When drawing out the rough animation for my artist response to Crymelt. I used the app "ibis Paint x". Although procreate dreams a specifically made for animation I found it lacked quite a few helpful features that would help me with animating. I opted to switch to ibis paint for the sketch stage of my short animation. ibis paint has limited features for animating, however, considering it had for tools available as well as ibis paint being the app im most familliar, I found this was more convenient for me. I used the 14 frames per second as I was only doing a short simple animation.

When I imported the rough animation from Ibis Paint to Procreate Dreams, I was able to add a new track and draw above the rough animation to create the line art and clean up the animation. While using multiple layers to animate different sections, I encountered an issue as merging layers was not an available option on Procreate Dreams. Additionally, I faced difficulties with the bucket tool, which did not allow me to fill in sections as a whole unless it was on the same layer, resulting in the need to manually color each section. To address this in the future, I may consider drawing the line art in one layer to avoid such challenges.

After completing the cleanup stage, I proceeded to the coloring and composing phase. As the line art was on different layers, I had to manually color each section on different tracks, leading to multiple tracks visible on the timeline. During this process, I experimented with different blending modes such as "multiply" and "color dodge" to enhance the color and lighting effects of my animation.

CREATIVE RESPONSE EVALUATION

I'm quite happy with how my animation in response to Crymelt's work turned out. Crymelt's often animates personal themes such as animations featuring herself, this inspired me to animate myself for this project as well as incorporate a bit of her art style. It was a great chance for me to try out new software like "Procreate Dreams." But I found it a bit tricky to use because it was missing some helpful features, like the lasso selection tool and the ability to merge layers. The bucket fill tool also caused me some trouble by filling the whole page with color instead of just the section I wanted. This meant I had to spend more time manually coloring sections of my drawing.

Because of these issues, I decided to use Ibis Paint for the rough animation, as it had more tools available, like the lasso selection tool. Then, I brought the rough animation into Procreate Dreams to clean it up. Even though this process took more time, I found it more convenient for creating a good-quality animation.

Looking back, I think I could improve the animation by adding more movement to make it look livelier, especially in areas like the hair. Now that I have some experience with Procreate Dreams, I hope my future animations will be faster as I get more familiar with the app.
